Netuitive and NetApp: Predictive Analytics and Capacity Management for the Cloud

NetApp Integration to Netuitive

Netuitive integrates with NetApp storage monitoring via an adapter for NetApp OnCommand with Performance Advisor. The integration is literally “hands off” in that, within minutes of installation, Netuitive simultaneously analyzes dozens of KPIs on NetApp appliances and volumes in real time. These metrics include NAS appliance CPU utilization, network interface transmit errors, and logical volume read/write latency. Within two hours of the start of metric analysis, Netuitive develops an Adaptive Behavior Profile™ based on the learned “normal” behavior for each storage component.

The “learning” continues so that, over time, Netuitive understands behavior by time of day, day of week even by season.  When “abnormal” behavior is detected, Netuitive sends a proactive Trusted Alarm™ indicating the extent and severity of the deviations, isolating the problem for system administrators. This happens automatically without any need for manual rules, scripts, or thresholds.

Trending resource utilization for capacity planning

Once Netuitive learns the “behavior” of appliances, volumes, servers, and network components, it can calculate accurate composite workload and capacity indices—how hard the resource is working and how much capacity “headroom” is left. By analyzing this data, not only can Netuitive help users optimize and accelerate server virtualization, but also the software accurately calculates how utilization is trending over the next 30, 60, 90, or 180 days, which is invaluable for storage capacity planning.
